sports stats


​baseball

batting average -- number of base hits divided by number of at bats (don't count walks or sacrifice hits)
example: Mike Trout has 82 hits in 250 at bats; 82 divided by 250 = .328
That means Trout is hitting .328 (people say "three twenty-eight").

earned run average -- number of runs allowed by a pitcher divided by number of innings pitched, then multiplied by 9 (multiply by 6 for Little League)
example: Clayton Kershaw has given up 14 runs in 56 innings; 14 divided by 56 = 0.25; 0.25 multiplied by 9 = 2.25
That means Kershaw's ERA is 2.25 (people say "two point two five").

football​

passing percentage -- number of completed passes divided by total number of passes thrown
example: Cam Newton has completed 145 passes out of 250 pass attempts; 145 divided by 250 = 0.58
That means Newton's pass completion percentage is 58%

passing yards per game -- total number of passing yards divided by number of games

rushing yards per carry -- total number of yards gained rushing divided by number of carries

rushing yards per game -- total number of yards gained rushing divided by number of games

punting average -- total yardage of all punts divided by number of punts

basketball​

scoring average -- total number of points scored divided by number of games played
example: Steph Curry scored 168 points and played 6 games; 168 divided by 6 = 28
That means Curry averages 28 points per game.

rebound/assist average -- total number of rebounds or assists divided by number of games played

soccer/hockey​

goals per game --  total number of goals scored divided by number of games played
example: Sidney Crosby scored 20 goals and played 80 games; 20 divided by 80 = 0.25
That means that Crosby averages .25 goals per game. 

assists per game -- total number of assists divided by number of games played
